The Key to Political Persuasion
The New York Times: IN business, everyone knows that if you want to persuade people to make a deal with you, you have to focus on what they value, not what you do. If you’re trying to sell your car, you emphasize the features of the sale that appeal to the buyer (the reliability and reasonable price of the vehicle), not the ones that appeal to you (the influx of cash). This rule of salesmanship, as we demonstrated in a series of experiments detailed in a recent article in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, also applies in political debate — i.e., you should frame your position in terms of the moral values of the person you’re trying to convince.

Twins Raised Apart Remarkably Similar
New York Magazine: Jack Yufe and Oskar Stohr were identical twins who were separated from each other as babies, when their parents divorced. The boys were raised apart and did not meet again until they were 21. Yufe died earlier this week, at the age of 82, and the Los Angeles Times details the striking similarities he shared with his twin brother, though there was that one exception: Yufe was raised Jewish in Trinidad, whereas Stohr grew up in Germany, where he joined up with the Nazi movement as a teenager.

New York Magazine: On Monday, Oxford Dictionaries released its word — or shall we say, feeling — of the year: that oxymoronic emoji your buds are always tossing around in text conversations, which shows a smiley face lined with streaming tears on either side, meant to convey something along the lines of “tears of joy” or “laughing to the point of crying.” On the one hand, yes, it is kind of ridiculous to select an emoji as the “word” of the year. But on the other hand, there really isn’t an existing English word that expresses the incongruous emotional outburst that little emoji gets across.

Reducing Intergroup Conflict Through Contact
The world is a diverse place containing people of different races, ethnicities, and nationalities. This diversity, although beneficial in many ways, can also lead to tensions resulting in conflict between groups. Such strife occurs at every level of society, and the negative social and political outcomes it produces have led researchers to investigate ways to reduce conflict and prejudice. In a 2015 study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, researchers Gunnar Lemmer and Ulrich Wagner (Philipps-University Marburg, Germany) examined the effectiveness of intergroup contact at reducing ethnic prejudice.
