Abstract
Attenuated drug cravings may lead to improved treatment outcomes. Negative affect is strongly tied to craving. Motivation to remain sober, often linked to decreased substance use, buffers against the effects of negative affect on craving. With strong ecological validity, these findings support the value of motivational interviewing in early recovery.
