Mental Processing of Negative Numbers: Are Negative Integers Represented and Operated Along a Bidirectional Mental Number Line?

Are negative integers processed in ways similar to natural numbers after long schooling? We examined whether estimated addition/subtraction involving a negative integer produced operational momentum effects in college students and found that such problems were likely solved by operating on the approximate magnitudes with additional componential processing of the symbols.
