Abstract

Studies suggest that mask-wearing preferences signal political tribal membership, and democrats and conservatives possess differing attitudes toward face masks. Mask-wearing has become polarized as citizens struggle between protecting public safety and maintaining individual freedom. We expect political outgroup dislike and objective risk to predict mask perceptions and mask-wearing.
