Abstract
Cultural outsiders' difficulty in becoming well-connected is partly explained by varying cultural standards for interpersonal competence. International students had significantly greater discrepancies between self- and peer-reports of emotional and social competencies, compared with American peers (N=1307). These increased self-other discrepancies partly mediated international students’ reduced social network connectedness.
