Abstract

We tested whether early irritability, a vulnerability to psychopathology, and trajectories of internalizing and externalizing symptoms across childhood were moderated by positive and negative parenting. Irritability predicted growth in depressive, oppositional-defiant, ADHD, and conduct symptoms. Low irritability predicted steeper symptom growth in high negative and low positive parenting contexts.
