Abstract

This study examined the effect of prior exposure to news headlines with fact checkers on the illusory truth effect. As predicted, participants perceived previously viewed headlines as more accurate than new headlines. A backfire effect did not occur, indicating that fact checks are useful tools for reducing belief in misinformation.
