Abstract
Ideological groups and leaders craft online messages in part to recruit followers. We examine ideological leader rhetoric in online communications vis-à-vis social identity, issues, emotions, and cognitive processes. Leaders focusing on issues employ more negative emotions whereas leaders focusing on social identity employ more cognitive processes in messages to followers.
