Abstract
Two experiments manipulated the strength of male and female fame (signal). When signal was male-biased, the fame criterion (β) for judging noise was set lower for non-famous males than females. The opposite occurred when the signal was female-biased, suggesting that judgments of fame are sensitive to local, immediate fame signal.
