The Effectiveness of a Mediator Cue Is Limited By Level of Encoding

Abstract
Retrieval practice facilitates memory when a test cue is semantically related to the original cue. We varied the level of encoding (orthographic; semantic) during original learning. A statistically significant interaction revealed that the effectiveness of a mediator cue was limited to semantic processing during original learning.
