Obtaining Measures of Vocal Traits from Cellular Phone Versus Laboratory-Based Recordings: Implications for Off-Site Data Collection

We investigated validity of voice recordings collected using participants’ cellular phones compared to those collected in a laboratory. Results demonstrated medium-to-strong test-retest correlations between traditional lab recordings. Both laboratory and phone recordings correlated strongly for fundamental frequency (F0; pitch) and modestly for F0 standard deviation, but not for formant measures.
