Abstract

Effort is aversive, yet humans work to help others. How do we decide who to help? In two studies, we show people generally avoid mental effort for an intragroup stranger and even a personally meaningful charity--preffering to think for themselves. Machine-learning analyses indicate that self-other overlap underlies decisions to help.
