The Player behind the Avatar: A Social Role Theory Perspective on Perceptions of Agency and Communion in Videogames

In two studies based on Social Role Theory, we established a list of archetypes in MMORPGs, and the extent to which these roles are associated with agency and communion. We show that fictional roles in videogames prompt perceptions of communion and agency similar to real life roles.
