Empathy and Truthfulness: Predicting Deception in Others

Eighty participants evaluated five video interviews of either male or female crime suspects, some of whom were lying. Participants rated either the truthfulness of each interviewee or their emotional reactions to each interview. The most accurate predictors of interviewee dishonesty were participant empathy for the person and the target’s demeanor.
