Prospective Association between Self-Esteem and Emotional Distress in Adolescents: Moderating Role of Gender

We examined whether gender influences the risk of developing emotional distress (depressive and test anxiety symptoms) among adolescents with positive and negative self-esteem. Using data from a longitudinal study, our analyses show that girls with negative self-esteem are more likely to experience an increase in test anxiety symptoms than boys.
