Eliciting the True Self: The Effects of Doctoral Education on Students’ Implicit Leadership Theories and Development of Authentic Leader Identity

Abstract

Personal constructs psychology was used to assess whether doctoral education serves as a catalyst for developing authentic leader identity reflecting the ‘true self’. Implicit leadership theories elicited using repertory grid technique revealed significant differences between incoming and advanced students in the complexity and integration, but not differentiation of leader identity.
