Abstract

Smartphone apps request permission to access private information. Current methods for warning users about permissions are ineffective. Therefore, we designed warnings that applied fear framing (incites fear) and prosocial framing (incites concern for others) for 365 users. We identify the psychological mechanisms responsible for their efficacy and key demographic differences.
