Abstract

Rationally, the number of possible points announced in a syllabus should not influence student perceptions. Game designers, however, view points as the tip of the motivational iceberg. Across multiple experiments, we found modest effect sizes indicating that more possible points is motivating and may reduce the fear of failing.
