Social Anxiety Predicts Declines in Best Friendships’ Intimacy for Adolescent Girls, but Not Boys

Abstract

We examined gender differences in the reciprocal, prospective relationship between social anxiety and best friendship intimacy and conflict in a sample of ethnically diverse adolescents. Our multigroup cross-lagged panel model revealed that social anxiety prospectively predicted declines in friendship intimacy for girls only and was unrelated to friendship conflict.
