Abstract

We examine gender and ethnic variations in student motivation and achievement in an introductory undergraduate chemistry course. N = 200 students from an ethnically-diverse public university participated. Despite gender and ethnic similarities in final exam performance, gender differences characterize self-reported perceived competence, interest, attainment value, and utility value in chemistry.
