Abstract

Early adverse experiences in an individual’s life can largely impact later substance use behaviors. Our results show that early adolescent exposure to violence, specifically experiencing rather than witnessing, predicts later illicit drug use. Understanding this relation can inform practice and policy aimed toward reducing hard drug use among youth.
