Understanding Disengagement Processes in Romantic Relationship Pursuit

Across two studies, we developed a 10-stage scenario to understand disengagement from romantic pursuit. Disengagement was significantly more likely for those with trait-like, low expectations of entering a relationship. On stages when participants’ expectations were lower and when participants were less attracted to their crush, disengagement was significantly more likely.
