The Effects of Social Comparison and Goal Orientation on Task Performance

Abstract

We examine the interaction effect between goal orientation and social comparison on task performance. We found that individuals tend to perform better when their goal is learning or prove-performance oriented in the presence of others as a comparison referent, and this tendency is stronger when the referent is worse off.
