Abstract
We tested whether context-dependent working memory retrieval is constrained by competition between items or higher-order context representations guiding their selection. Using a task that independently manipulated the number of relevant contexts and items (100 participants), we found that selecting multiple contexts incurred greater performance costs than selecting multiple items.
