Drawing Symbols By Hand Leads to Lasting Changes in Brain Function during Visual Symbol Perception

Abstract

We demonstrate that drawing leads to sustained changes in cortical activation during visual symbol perception. fMRI data from 42 adult participants revealed elevated activation in the frontal and parietal cortices while participants viewed trained vs untrained symbols at post-training scans that was not observable at the pre-training scan.
