Abstract

Students' evaluations of their scientific literacy (as a whole and through ratings of relevant skills) predicted their performance on an article reading assignment where they identified key details through highlighting. Analysis of their responses suggested that novices struggle with identifying the research question, hypotheses and design of experiments.
