Preparing Discussion Prompts for Deep Levels of Cognitive Engagement in a Cognitive Psychology Class

Abstract

Researchers explored how the content of discussion prompts in a graduate-level psychology course influences students' cognitive engagement in virtual discussion boards. Results showed an association between providing more information and asking more questions led to shallower levels of cognitive engagement while explicit deep and reflective prompts led to deeper levels.
