Ethnic-Racial Socialization Buffers Racial Discrimination's Longitudinal Association with Self-Esteem Trajectories Among Black Emerging Adults
This study found negative associations between trajectories of racial discrimination and self-esteem across emerging adulthood (ages 18-28) in a sample of Black Americans from rural Georgia and Iowa. The negative impacts of early and ongoing racial discrimination on self-esteem were buffered by parental cultural socialization provided in adolescence.
