Unselfish Traits and Social Decision-Making Patterns Characterize Six Populations of Real-World Extraordinary Altruists

Acts of extraordinary, costly altruism have long represented an evolutionary and motivational puzzle. We conducted the first assessment of personality and behavior in six groups of real-world extraordinary altruists and found they are best distinguished from controls by unselfish traits and decision-making patterns, indicating unusually high valuation of others’ outcomes.
