Onset of Maternal Depression As Catalyst for Cooperation: Evidence from Uganda

Virtual

Oral · Behavioral Economics

We employ a quasi-experimental strategy to analyze the causal effects of perinatal depression on social support in 292 women from Uganda. Our data shows that the cusp of moderate depression seems to elicit substantial cooperation (instrumental and emotional support) from individuals closely linked to the mother (especially the baby’s father).
