Pragmatic Function of Gestures

People gesture when they speak, especially when speaking is difficult. Why? Here, we propose a pragmatic explanation: People may gesture when their speech is less fluent because gestures signal the speaker's intent to continue speaking despite the current interruption in their speech––a pragmatic function.
