Should I Follow My Dreams or be a Doctor? Economic Inequality Leads to Fewer Perceived Pathways to Success
Across two cross-national datasets, higher economic inequality was associated with fewer perceived pathways to success by students, which in turn predicted greater student competition and greater preference for prioritizing locals (vs immigrants) in times of job scarcity. Implications regarding the adverse effects of competitiveness and discrimination against immigrants are discussed.
