Computational and Neuropsychological Mechanisms of Perceived Social Isolation
Social expectations and behaviors were strongly divergent in lonelier individuals. This expectations-behavior divergence was mitigated by psychological traits such as extroversion. Computational modeling reveals an information integration asymmetry in lonely individuals with higher weighting of negative than positive feedback. Reduced neural activity in the orbitofrontal cortex reflected these loneliness effects.
