The Symbolic Threat of Science: When Exaggerations of Intergroup Differences Occur during Evaluations of the Scientific Community

Virtual

Oral · Social Psychology

Two studies examined the impacts of symbolic threat on intergroup differences between laypeople and the scientific community. Negative intergroup evaluations were higher when science was considered more threatening and scientists were considered more prevalent in society. Findings indicate the need to consider the salience of group identities in science communication.
