Effect of Juror Perceptions of the Insanity Defense and Mental Illness within the Criminal Justice System
This study investigated attitudes towards defendants with mental illness based upon characteristics within themselves and the defendant’s plea. Attitudes about the insanity defense impacted participant responses on evaluation questions, noticeably when the NGRI plea was present. Participants with more conservative and authoritarian views demonstrated negative view towards the label “psychopath”.
