A Friendly Touch Relieves, a Cold Touch Frightens: Social Support during Instructed Fear of Shock

In an instructed fear task, participants had larger postauricular reflex magnitudes when their friends placed a hand on their shoulders than when they were alone, indicating support. However, people whose friends were high in the Coldness facet of meanness within psychopathy had higher startle blink magnitudes, indicating increased defensive processing.
