Morally Unacceptable Actions Become Less Unacceptable through Imaginative Moral Shifts

Virtual

Oral · Social Psychology

How do people come to consider a morally unacceptable action to be less unacceptable? Four experiments identify an imaginative moral shift: an action is less morally unacceptable when people imagine circumstances in which it would have been moral. The effect occurs effortlessly, also occurs for unreasonable actions.
