Mapping Meaning to Spoken and Written Wordforms: Visual and Tactual Readers Show Preference for Speech
Blind (n = 23) and sighted (n = 20) adults studied written definitions of rare words that were presented in spoken or written form. All participants mapped meanings more efficiently to spoken wordforms than to written wordforms, but blind participants’ performance was more balanced across modalities.
