Expansive and Contractive Scope of Projection

Social projection is the tendency to perceive that others share one’s judgments. We examined whether people’s inferences about similar others are affected by psychological distance. Across 4 studies (total N= 1115), we found that as psychological distance increased, projection of lower-level concrete features decreased relative to higher-level abstract ones.
