The Community Attitudes Toward Mental Illness Scale: What Does It Measure 40 Years Later?
Confirmatory factor analysis and a large (n = 749) sample was used to compare factor structures of a widely cited mental illness stigma measure. A simplified, 3-factor structure best fit the data. Participants thought of many mental conditions when responding, suggesting measurement challenges. Strategies to consolidate measurement tools are discussed.
