Original Idea Generation and Transitions between Items during Divergent Thinking Tasks

How is original idea generation during divergent thinking influenced by autonomously-guided (free-to-choose) versus externally-prompted continuous shifting between items? Using two divergent tasks, we found no evidence that continuous shifting (thought to combat fixation), enhances originality above free-to-choose scheduling. Transitioning between items has diverse cognitive-perceptual effects that conjointly shape idea-generation processes.
