Dos and Don'ts in Social Contexts: Diverging Cognitive Activation of Prescription and Prohibition Norms

How are social norms represented and activated in specific contexts? We used a new task in which people are asked to list relevant norms for various scene contexts and found that prescriptions and prohibitions—the major types of norms—differ in their activation, context specificity, and structural organization.
