People Overlook Social Forces That Promote Common Ground in Dialogue
Dialogue strengthens connections, yet people undervalue social forces that facilitate connecting through dialogue. Strangers expected to form similar connections through monologue or dialogue but underestimated the positivity of dialogue, especially during disagreement (Exps. 1-3). This occurred because participants overlooked the importance of responsiveness for finding common ground (Exp. 4).
