Amplification in the Evaluation of Multiple Emotional Expressions over Time

Emotion research has focused on people’s ability to evaluate single emotional representations, leaving the question of how people summarize continuous emotional representations unanswered. In 8 studies (N= 1,400) we show that people overestimate the intensity of sequences of emotions, and that this is driven by memory to more emotional expressions.
