Out of Sight, out of Mind: Neglecting the Cost of Punishment Increases Criminal Sentencing Recommendations in Prosecutors

This experiment tests the effect of sentencing cost transparency on punishment judgments in professional prosecutors. We find that information about the costs of incarceration significantly reduces sentencing recommendations, suggesting that prosecutors value the costs but neglect to consider them unless they are made salient.
