The Mariah Effect: A Novel Form of Effective Status Competition

Research on status and related competition emphasize male-typical defaults—criteria like physical formidability, overt competition). Exploring female-typical aspects—criteria like visibility, covert competition—led us to investigate the Mariah Effect, by which actors’ “non-recognition” (explicitly stating they don’t know a target) diminishes target status without making the actor seem aggressive.
