Self-Disclosure on Social Media Is Bittersweet: Feeling of Belonging Is Affected By Social Anxiety and Privacy

To examine the roles of social anxiety and privacy of online disclosures for belongingness, 417 Canadian young adults completed an online survey. Private disclosure was associated with enhanced feelings of connectedness among those with higher levels of social anxiety, whereas public disclosure diminished belongingness for those with lower social anxiety.
