Limits to Progress in Savings Behaviour Research

Policy reform based on ‘nudging’ strategies has led to increased participants within retirement savings plans, but also altered savings behaviour, with lower individual contributions significantly offsetting overall gains. Findings from UK survey data offer insight into unmet saving preferences, suggesting new approaches for encouraging additional voluntary contributions.
