Abstract

Recordings of naturalistic interactions in 3 Pirahã villages were analyzed for direct and indirect speech to infants and pre-teens. Direct speech to infants was non-existent, and to children was rare. Children did talk to each other, but the majority of speech encountered by infants was from overheard conversations.
