An Assessment-Centered Approach Improves Statistics Learning and Reduces Statistics Anxiety

Abstract
Poor performance in statistics courses negatively impacts academic progress and heightens anxiety towards statistics. We compared two undergraduate statistics classes taught by the same instructor. Those taught via an assessment-centered approach performed significantly better on exams and showed significantly greater decreases in anxiety than those taught via a computational approach.
